William Louis Petersen was born in Evanston, Illinois. He attended Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Idaho.
He is made famous from his role as Gil Grissom in CBS' CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The role is reprised from Peterson's role in Michael Mann's Manhunter (1986).
In one of the CSI's episode, the plot line had him pursuing an insane killer played by Tom Noonan, who also played the insane killer in Manhunter.
