Sean Penn was born in Santa Monica, California. Penn had his acting debut in 1981, when he played in Harold Becker's Taps. In 1982, he portrayed Jeff Spicoli in Amy Heckerling's Fast Times at Ridgemont High. In 1984, Penn was listed as one of twelve "Promising New Actors of 1984" in John Willis' Screen World, Vol. 36.
Sean Penn is known for his quick temper and uncompromising principles. He was married to Madonna in 1985 and divorced in 1989. In 1987, Penn served 32 days in jail for hitting an extra.
In 1991, Sean Penn had his debut as director when he filmed The Indian Runner. In 1995 Penn directed The Crossing Guard in which Anjelica Houston received Golden Globe Award and SAG Award for her performance.
In 2003, Sean Penn starred in Clint Eastwood's Mystic River as Jimmy Marcus alongside with Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon and Laurence Fishburne.
