Maura Tierney was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father, Joseph Tierney was an eight-term Boston City Councilor and mayoral candidate. Her mother, Pat, is a real estate agent.
Tierney attended Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, an all-girls, Catholic high school.
After graduate from high school, Tierney, who has always been interested in the dramatic arts, attended New York University and Circle in the Square Theatre School.
Her first television appearance was in Norman Lear's comedy series "704 Hauser Street".
Tierney got a role in NBC's comedy, "NewsRadio" one day before they shot the pilot. She had the role for four years as newswriter Lisa Miller.
In 1994, Maura was cast in the role of Nurse Abigail 'Abby' Lockhart in "ER" without an audition.
On the big screen, Tierney starred with Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock in the film ?Forces of Nature,? opposite Anthony Hopkins and Cuba Gooding Jr. in ?Instinct,? alongside John Travolta and Emma Thompson in Mike Nichols? ?Primary Colors,? and opposite Jim Carrey in ?Liar, Liar.? Earlier this year she was seen in ?Scotland P.A.,? written and directed by her husband, Billy Morrissette, and also starring Christopher Walken and Tierney?s former ?NewsRadio? co-star Andy Dick. Tierney was most recently seen starring opposite Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Hilary Swank in ?Insomnia.?
