Diego Luna was born in Mexico City. His birth name was Diego Luna Alexander. His mother, Fiona Alexander died when he was two years old in a car accident. His father is a famous theatre, cinema and opera set designer in Mexico.

Diego Luna started his acting career in early age. His first appearance on television was in El Ultimo fin de ano in 1991. He also appearead in Spanish soap Opera El Abuelo y yo, El in 1992. Diego Luna got his career breakthrough when he was casted in Y tu mama tambien (2001), a critically acclaimed movied, alongside with his best friend Gael Garcia Bernal.

Diego Luna started to get some recognitions from US audience when he starred in Vampires: Los Muertos and Frida in 2002. He also starred in Havana Nights: Dirty Dancing 2, the prequel of Dirty Dancing as Javier Suarez.
